Your One Stop Shop For Bad Grammer!
Wow. What a wonderful Fourth. Usually this is not such a big holiday for me, my family generally just goes to a movie or something and then to one of the high school fireworks displays in town. Meh. I was expecting to spend this year lying on the couch with a bowl of ice cream or working. The only reason those scintillating plans didn’t come to fruition was because I had an out of town guest. It’s funny how having guests is sometimes the only way you get out and do things in your own town. So, Megan came up from San Diego for the weekend and shook me out of my torpor. We had such an exciting day. We started out by driving (with Saara) up into the Santa Ynez mountains up to Red Rock swimming hole. It was beautiful. The drive is really long and takes you over the top of the mountains and into the valley on the other side. It was foggy in the Santa Barbara basin, but as soon as we got up over the top of the mountains it was beautiful and clear and blue; everything you could wish for in a day. Red Rock is a popular local swimming area, though it is about a 45 minutes out of town. It looks like this:
See why it’s popular? That picture actually doesn’t do it justice. Red rock and green water contrast most magnificently. We actually spent most of our time at another, farther swimming hole that was completely deserted while we were there. We were all alone in this clear spring water, floating in the mountains with fish and eating chicken with yellow jackets. Bliss. I came home sunburned like you wouldn’t believe. My back is cherry tomato red and itches like the bejeesus but lord, it was a nice afternoon. In the evening Saara split off to go to a party but Megan and I headed out to the Santa Barbara Harbor for a fire works display. There had to have been at least 5,000 people spread out on the beach and the pier, waiting for the sun to go down. We found a spot on a log bench, all the way down at the end of the wharf. We weren’t sure exactly where the fireworks were going to be shot off from so boy were we surprised when they started exploding directly across the harbor from us; right over our heads! It was awesome, I’ve never seen fireworks over water before. It was an amazing sight. An even more amazing sight was that of thousands of people flooding off the beach and back into downtown Santa Barbara after the show. At one point, as we were going through the tunnel under the railroad tracks, I turned back to look at the hollering, whistling crowd rushing en mass down the center of the street and thought of a scene out of a disaster movie, with everyone heading for the hills as the buildings of the skyline are obliterated in the background. So, a very nice evening. Isla Vista, of course, was a hot bed of illegal firework activity. The police didn’t much seem to care so the whole day was punctuated by the muted booms and sizzles of ill gotten gains. This morning the street is littered with water balloon confetti and firework refuse, and I still hear the occasional popper going off outside my windows. I think, as soon as we get our pictures developed, I’ll post those. Hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth, I certainly did. 3:32 p.m. July 05, 2004
