On Wednesday I had my first lesson at the most beautiful house ever. See, this program that I teach is seriously expensive so most of the kids that I tutor live in the more ritzy areas of Santa Barbara, namely Montecito and Hope Ranch. These areas are really damn expensive so most of the houses I go to look nice but aren’t gigantic. They cost a lot because they’re near the ocean, or they have a huge yard (and horse barn!) but the houses themselves aren’t just ridiculously gorgeous.

This house though, oh my god. First off it’s up this long windy mountain road into rich-people-dom. So I’m driving along (late because of traffic) alternating, “shit, if I drive off the road I bet I wont get paid” with “holy shit, look at that view.” Finally, way at the edge of the mountain with a view that is all mountain-ocean-sunset spectacular is their house.

I don’t even know if I can adequately describe this house. The family is Chinese, fairly obviously first generation (both of the parents are tiiiiny, the mom comes up to my waist), and they have the whole house done up as though it were a country home in Beijing. I drove in through the courtyard (courtyard!) which was flanked by two gigantic statues (kind of like these to my ignorant mind except more military looking and less old … I would hope.) The interior has that really low slung, open feeling, with vases and prancing horses everywhere on end tables.

I know this sounds like it would look really weird with the typical Santa Barbara stucco, red tile, palm tree setting but surprisingly it doesn’t. It’s so …harmonious. I am so not describing this well. It’s just that this house, the view, it’s like it’s at the edge of the world. It sits up there in all the evening fog, an amalgam of East and West and it’s freaking gorgeous and I want them to adopt me.

On a totally different note. I had a weird moment of dissonance in my diaries class the other day. I figured out that author of one of my favorite series of entries is this girl that I loathe.

I disagree with almost everything she says in class, and the way she says it. I even hate her lotion, but damn, she writes very well. Her entries are really light and entertaining, very descriptive and delightful to read. I would have expected her to be the author of one of the more pedantic series of entries, some pretentious discourse on the meaning of aloneness or something. This is distressing. I may have to block my new knowledge, just so that I can continue to read with enjoyment.

The fact that I just walked upstairs and saw one of my new housemates standing on her desk chair slowly revolving in circles for no apparent reason.
